I was influenced by many artists and musicians throughout my life. In my early years of playing the guitar, I refused to learn other people's songs. I never wanted to be that guy who could only play covers and is completely influenced by everyone else. I refused, but after a while, and spending a lot of time at festivals, well I wanted to sing a Kumbaya.
I eventually learned the benefit of learning other songs... amongst many lessons,. it's all one song. And realized I didn't want to play it like them, but still wanted to pay them an homage. They wouldn't want me to play like them either. They kept the traditions alive by learning from the old and throwing in a twist or many for that matter.
Each one of these songs affected me in pinnacle ways throughout the years and I think of them when they were in their twenties writing and playing the song in the studio or around a campfire with bottles and smoke and friends.
They've taught me much and I consider these and other artists some of my best friends, even though we haven't officially "met" yet.
